Roots: Roots fibrous or enlarged.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, in rosettes or spread along stem. Veins parallel. Petioles usually absent. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescence mostly terminal, cymes fused in pairs, enclosed by 2 boat–shaped bracts, bracts similar to or different from leaves. Flowers bisexual (perfect), radially symmetrical. Calyx of 3 sepals; sepals usually free. Corolla of 3 petals, usually free, blue–violet, pink, purple, or white. Stamens 6, all fertile and ± equal. Ovary superior, 3-carpellate; stigma knoblike.

Fruit: Dehiscent capsules. Seeds 1–2 per locule.
